African Safari

Here's a bit about a 2 week small group African Safari trip that I took in early October. It was an amazing experience.

This time of year is the end of the dry season and excellent for seeing a wide variety of animals.  I constantly carried two mirrorless cameras and didn't change lenses due to concern about dust.  One camera was a full frame with wide to standard zoom range lens. The second was an APS-C(to extend lens reach) camera with a telephoto zoom lens. This worked out really well. Most photos were taken while in an open jeep.

Our African Safari trip was organized by Gate 1 Discovery Tours.  It was a group of 14 people traveling to Safari Lodges in Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.  Although this wasn't a tour for photographers, there were plenty of opportunities for great photos and the rangers / jeep drivers were generally very helpful to people trying to get good photos.  We stayed at a variety of safari lodges, but the food, lodging and safaris were always good.  We stayed in each location for 2 to 3 days.  We got to see and photograph an amazing number of animals and to see them in a variety of situations from relaxing to hunting or being hunted. A fight between two male rhinos was impressive. A long line(parade) of elephants walking through the woods, but barely making a sound.  We traveled in open jeeps, with 6 to 8 people in 3 rows of seats at different heights. Environments were on the large Zambezi River with crocodiles, hippos, elephants, etc; in the dry "bush" most days, and a day at Victoria Falls.

The dry season, May - Oct is very good for animal viewing since foliage is not in the way and animals congregate at water sources.  Examples of animals seen are lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, giraffes,  crocodiles, hippos, wild dogs, warthogs, baboons, Cape Buffaloes, a great variety of antelopes, hyenas, monkeys, zebras and very interesting birds.   I highly recommend this type of safari trip!  Mark Butler
