About this event
Photographing Santa Cruz Tide Pools
Do you wonder what lurks under the sea? Let's find out together! This December, on Friday the 13th, (yes that day) during a low tide of the annual King Tides, we will photograph tide pools in Santa Cruz. This is an amazing opportunity to capture images of colorful sea stars, dragon-like nudibranchs, sea anemones, crabs, mussels, limpets, snails, chitons, small fish, sea urchins, and sometimes even octopuses (octopi?).
We will meet at Natural Bridges State Park parking lot at 3:30pm on Friday, Dec 13th.
There is a small fee for parking ($10) in the lot or you may find parking on the street.
From there, we will walk down to the beach and shoot the tidal pools for approximately 2 hours.
We will explore under the bridge, between the rocks and in the cliff walls.
This will include golden hour as the sun sets around 5pm.
Here are items you may want to bring:
- waterproof shoes or sturdy boots that can get wet and will prevent you from slipping
- warm layers as it gets cooler
- lens cloth for splashes
- a tripod if you want to shoot longer exposures from the beach as it gets darker
- macro lens for close-ups
- polarizer filter
- snacks & water
- flashlight (for safety after dark)
This is a wonderful activity for people of all ages and is a distinctly Santa Cruz experience. Of course, this event is weather dependent. Be sure to register to get updates and notifications.
A few words of caution:
Be safe while tide-pooling by never turning your back on the waves, wearing appropriate shoe attire to avoid slipping, and being aware of incoming tides to ensure you can safely leave the area before the tide rises.
Tide pools are sensitive habitats full of living creatures. The tide pools are a Marine Protected Area, which means no touch and no take. Please remember to always leave no trace, respect the creatures you encounter by giving them space, and watch where you step!
Special thanks to Katie Larson for her efforts organizing this event and for the photos above!
